A BOOK OF STRATTONS, Volume 2, 1918:

OPENING:
Strattons of New Jersey
Mark Stratton of Evesham

In 1914, in repairing and putting in order the old orthodox "Friends' Burial Ground" at Medford, N.J., in preparation for the centennial celebration (one hundred years since the present meeting house was built), a brick was found below the ground near a grave with "M. S. 1754" marked on it. It is suggested that this marks the grave of Mark Stratton [IT DOES!], as his was the first burial there. At any rate, this is interesting in connection with "Grandmother Cowperthwaite's Sketch" given on page 240, Vol. 1, of this work. This would put his birth back to 1687, as he was sixty seven years old when he died. Headstones were not permitted by Quakers at that date. If, as Grandmother Cowperthwaite's Sketch indicates, Mark and Emanuel Stratton "came out of Old England in 1702", a research amont the many sources of information in England would be quite likely to discover their ancestry there and perhaps show some connection between them and the early Boston Strattons, who were also Quakers, one of whom, it will be remembered, married a granddaughter of the eminent Ann Hutchinson. Mark Stratton was a man of some prominence in the Quaker community in which he lived and was quite well to do for that time and place. More than a thousand of his descendants are traced in this volume. Emanuel Stratton died early in 1725, twelve years after his marriage to Hannah Hancock. His son Jacob may be the ancestor of the Strattons who, a generation later, were living in Northern New Jersey.

A Book of Strattons, Vol II:

STRATTONS OF SUSSEX COUNTY (Chart O, Vol I), Pg 477

"The homes of Daniel and Thomas Stratton were in Vernon township, not far from the line dividing Sussex Co., New Jersey, from Orange Co., New York. When Capt. John Sanford organized his regiment of Orange County men in April, 1777, Thomas Stratton enlisted in his company, but was soon transferred to Col. Oliver Spencer's 4th New Jersey Volunteers, and the papers granting his pension in 1820 are on file at Trenton. He was then living in Beaver Co., Pennsylvania, while Daniel Strattion settled in Hancock Co., Ohio. No authentic record of their parentage has been found, though diligent search has been made for it. It seems most probable that they are descended either from Mark Stratton or Emanuel Stratton of Evesham, New Jersey, but we have no proof of it.

============================================

SO.... (V1,II) Thomas Stratton's son, (V1,15) Daniel Stratton, born 1794 in New Jersey, married Rachel Logan in 1813, moved to Ohio in 1821, and died in 1879 at 85 years. His son (V2,5) David Stratton, born 1829, married Mary Logan:

Vol 1 PG 290 says that the deeds of Sussex County, New Jersey, show that in 1779, two Strattons owned land in that county, Daniel Stratton and Thomas Stratton. They both left New Jersey before 1820; Daniel died in Ohio; Thomas in Pennsylvania. Their descendants believe that they were brothers. Tradition says that they were grandsons, or great-grandsons of (V1,1)Mark Stratton.

Vol 1 PG 291 says (V1,I) Thomas Stratton's brother: Daniel Stratton's grandson, Mark Stratton of Wabash, Indiana, claimed that he was named for his ancestor "the Original Mark Stratton", and that he was descended from (V1,1)Mark Stratton and "his beautiful wife Ann Hancock" is well understood by his descendants.

Vol 1 says (V2,5) David Stratton's will is in Richland County, Ohio, in 1843, mentions his wife and names 4 sons: John K., Daniel G., Washington, and James Laget (all under age), and 5 daughters, Mary, Elizabeth, Rachel, Ann and Nancy. One daughter married a man by the name of Dancer, as the will mentions grandchildren David and Elizabeth Dancer. Witnesses to this will are John Dancer, John G. Dancer, and John Class; the executor, John Bryte.
