"William Matlack, the progenitor of the Matlack family, came from Cropwell Bishop, Nottinghamshire, England, to America in the ship "Kent," with Dr. Daniel Wills and others, in 1677. He was a carpenter by trade, and is said to have built the first two houses in Burlington, New Jersey. He married in 1682, Mary Hancock, who came from Brayles, Warwickshire, England, with her brother Timothy, in the ship "Paradise,", in 1681. He was granted one hundred acres of land by Thomas Olive, between the brances of the Pennsaukin Creek, in Chester Township, adjoining lands of his brother-in-law, Timothy Hancock, and others."
