Seth Stratton (Sarah's first child (first child of David & Mary Stratton, Mark's first son))

Seth - born Oct 15, 1762

As we now know, they were very devoted Quakers / Society of Friends.

David & Mary (Elkington)'s first child & daughter, Sarah, had a child out of wedlock, and was removed from the family for that reason. (She relocated to Virginia, and later married and had a family).

Her child stayed with David & Mary, with the Stratton family, in New Jersey.

In Mark's (or David, his dad's?!) will, he gave "Grandson Seth Stratton the sum of 5 Pounds to be paid to him by my Exectrix when he arrives at the age of twenty one years". Well, Seth was Sarah's illegitimate child apparently.

According to William F. Boogher's "Gleanings in Virginia History", Seth Stratton was in Capt. Daniel Morgan's rifle company, which marched from Winchester, VA. to Cambridge, Mass., and joined the army under General Washington.

You may have noticed that some of the children named have Bibilcal names. This remained in this Branch of the 5 early original Stratton Familys for several generations, most likely here because of the Quaker influence. However, some of this family, at least the ones who stayed in Virginia, were on the Frontier and lived in settlement that were being harassed by the Indians, egged on and supplied by the British out of Detroit. If one was to eke out a living as a farmer etc., he had to forget about his Quaker teachings and fight back. As you can see, Seth was a soldier, and like many others, he was entitled to land if he survived the war."

For some more sources of info on Seth, on Genforum. A note from a John Stratton concerning Seth - Seth's grandmother, Ann Hancock, grandmother Ohanis Hancock. Ann's father, Timothy Hancock who came over in 1681, with other Colonists, on the good ship "Paradise" with his sister Mary.
