[return Home]

Mark Stratton - born 1691 in England

Along with his 1,000's of Stratton/Strattan/Stretton descendants living in America today.
And his Grandson, Timothy Matlack, who penned the Declaration of Independence!

Mark came to America in 1702

with his brother Manuell,
and their friend/future brother-in law,
Robert Braddock, Sr.

Mark was born in 1691, in Market Harborough, England, and came to America in 1702 with his Brother Manuell and a friend, Robert Braddock Sr, as Quakers

They settled in New Jersey, and in 1713, Mark and Manuell married two of "The Hancock Sisters" on the same day (Robert married a sister in 1709)

Mark was buried in 1759, at the age of 67, in New Jersey, the first burrial in the new "Friends" cemetary, on Braddock's land

Some of Mark's sons usually spelled the name Strattan, and several branches still use it today.
- Neither Mark nor Manuell signed his own will, but previous documents with their signatures show "Stratton"

Mark, and his brother Manuell, were the original STRATTON settlers in Glouceter County. New Jersey
(Unrelated to the multiple other STRATTON lines from New York and other locations)

Shown here is the Jean Stratton & Joshua Norcross Bible that gave us the hint as to Mark and Manuel's ancestry!
We almost lost it to history, as it was passed down from generation to generation, through the youngest daughter,
thus forgetting about the Stratton's and the inscription about Mark's history. At one time, this Bible
was on display at a Heritage Society (unknown name and location)

This Bible was brought to North America in 1755 by David Strattan as gift to
his sister Jean Strattan on her marriage to Joshua Norcross

An Oxford Bible

In Mark's last days, he spoke the following of his past, which was written in the Family Bible by his Daughter Jean:

"My Father, Mark Stratton, departed this life the 3rd day of April, in the Year of our Lord 1759, the 69th year of his age. Was buried the 4th Day having 9 children, 28 grandchildren who followed him to his grave. He had upward of 60 grandchildren in his time. He lived a married life upward of 25 years. He was born at Market Harborough, in Leicestershire in the Kingdom of England, and came to America in the Year of the Lord 1702. He was buried at the new schoolhouse lately erected on Robert Braddock's land in Evesham County of Burlington, by the consent of the said Robert Braddock and other Friends concerned therein being the first person laid in the said burying ground."

History of this Bible as told by the current owner as of 2017:

- Mark married Ann Hancock (b. Aug 11, 1691 in Chester Township, Morris, New Jersey) on October 8th, 1713, Manuell also married Hannah Hancock on October 8th, 1713. (Robert Braddock Sr. married Elizabeth Hancock in 1709)
(The book Genealogy of the Stokes Family (1903) lists their marriages as October 10th, 1713)

- Mark was a Tailor by profession, and was raised a Quaker

- Mark was a member of the Society of Friends, Quakers

- Mark died in 1759, burried near his home, the first in the new cemetary, on Braddock's land

Mark also married twice again after Ann died in ____, to ______ and ________.

The origins of Mark Strattan (Stratton, Streton) and his brother Manuell Strattan, who came to the Quaker colony in South Jersey circa 1702, were originally from Market Harborough, Leicestershire, England.
Manuell STRATTAN, son of Richard (Webster) baptised 15 May 1689...
and Mark STRATTAN, son of Richard (Webster) baptised 27 February 1690. The name of the mother of these two was Elizabeth Strattan (Webster).

Daniel (second child of Daniel and Bathsheba (Braddock) Zelley) married Dorothy Stratton March 26 1816, daughter of Enoch and Hannah (Branin) Stratton, of Evesham township, Burlington county. "Dorthy Stratton was a direct descendant of Mark Stratton, whose ancestry and nativity is not established, but a record of his great-grandaughter, Martha Cowperthwaite, states "that he came from old England in 1702 with Robert Braddock Sr. and several others" and died April 3, 1759, aged 69. His was the first burial in the Orthodox Friends burial ground at Medford, New Jersey. Mark Stratton married August 8, 1713 at Evesham, Burlington county, New Jersey, Ann, daughter of Timothy Hancock, of Brayles, in Warwickshire, England, and sailed in teh ship "Paradice," Captain Evele, in 1681. Timothy Hancock with John Roberts and William Matlack settled on land between the north and south brances of the Penisaukin Creek near Moorestown, New Jersey, where still remains and old graveyard on the north brance of said creek, sold by Timothy Hancock for the purpose, on the farm now owned by Charles Haines. Hannah Branin was the daughter of John Branin and Jane Moore, Protestant Irish stock, whose emigration and nativity is not fully known.

THE MARK STRATTON CONNECTION:
The Market Harborough source from a handwritten entry in Bible belonging to Mark Strattan's daughter (Jean Strattan Norcross, given to her by David Stratton) and scripted in her hand in the Bible, on the event of his death 3 April 1759, where she specifically states his birthplace as Market Harborough.

"Their marriage is found on the Haddenfield Monthly Meeting records in New Jersey. They lived in Evesham Township, near Medford, New Jersey. "May 16, 1716, Mark bought 120 acres of land of Felix Leech, a part of which he sold to his brother, Manuell, in 1723. In 1755, besides his homestead farm, he owned several other tracts of land, which by his will was divided among his five sons. "He lived to see all his children married into good old Quaker families of the community, and settled in homes of their own, not far from the parental roof. "Among his descendants, now found in almost every part of our country, are stories of his devout Christian character, and noble, manly appearance, and of the sweet beauty of his wife, and her sister, 'the Hancock girls'. According to the record left by 'Grandmother Gowperthwaite', Mark died April 3, 1759, aged 67 years, and was of ground [sic] became the Friends' graveyard at Medford and many of Mark's descendants are buried there."

Text: My father Mark Strattan departed this life the 3rd day of April in the year of our Lord 1759 in the 69th year of his age. Was buried the next Day having 8 children and 20 grandchildren who followed him to the grave (attended the funeral). He had upwards of fifty grandchildren in his time, he lived a married life upwards of 25 years. He was born at Marketharboroug, Leicestershire in the Kingdom of England and came to America in the year of our Lord 1702. He was buried at the New School house lately erected on Robert Braddock's land in Evesham, County of Burlington by the consent of said Robert Braddock and other friends concerned therein -- being the first person laid in said burying ground.

"In the autumn of 1713 two daughters of Timothy Hancock married Strattons. These two young men, Manuell Stratton and Mark Stratton, were brothers."

"Manuell Stratton of Gloucester County, New Jersey, yeoman, a native of Long Island and a member of the Society of Friends is said to have descended from a William Stratton, of Stratford, England, four of whose sons emigrated to America. Manuell died in 1725 appointing his 'lone brother,' Mark Stratton of Evesham, executor of his will."

Mark Stratton's Headstone & Burial, in New Jersey

"Headstones were not permitted by Quakers at the time of Mark's death."

"Mark Stratton was a man of some prominence in the Quaker community in which he lived and was quite well to do for that time and place. More than a thousand of his descendants have been traced since the early 1900's."

From "A Book of Strattons: Volume 2":
In 1914, in repairing and putting in order the old Orthodox "Friends' Burial Ground" at Medford, New Jersey, in preparation for the centennial celebration (one hundred years since the present meeting house was built), a brick was found below the ground near a grave with "M. S. 1754" marked on it. It is suggested that this markes the gave of Mark Stratton, as his was the first burial there.

The Stratton / Braddock House in New Jersey
Built by Isaac Stratton, Mark Stratton's son, in 1760, a year after Mark was buried.
The home was sold to the family frends, the Braddock Family, in 1795, and still remains to this day!
The address is 70 S. Main St., Medford, New Jersey, 08055 USA - one block from Mark's burial site.

Most of the land of what is now Medford Village was owned by two families in l775– the Braddocks and the Branins. This brick residence was built of Flemish Bond brick that year for John Braddock, a tanner, by Isaac Stratton. It was probably built in two sections. The house has a varied pattern, as every other brick has a salt glazed end– of dark green color, very shiny and having the hardness of flint. In l795, Robert Braddock purchased the property.

STRATTONS OF SUSSEX COUNTY (Chart O, Vol 1)

Daniel?
(1) David Stratton, b. Sussex County (m. Mary Logan, dau. of James Logan*, Beaver Co.). died 1843 in Richland Co, Ohio

* James Logan was President of the Colonial Council of Pennsylvania in 1736. When Gov. Gordon died, in August of that same year, Logan acted as Governor for two years until a successor arrived from England. John Logan (son of James) and his only son were drowned in the Ohio River, in Beaver Co., Pennsylvania, in 1800. His wife died from the shock of this terrible bereavement, leaving three daughters, Rachel, Mary, and Catherine, the eldest seven years and the youngest but a few days old. Their maternal grandfather, James Parks, in whose house the most of their youth was spent, fought in the French and Indian Wars, and in the Revolution, and lived to the great age of one hundred and eleven years. Rachel became the wife of Daniel Stratton (No. 15, Vol 1) and her memory is revered by over two hundred descendants. Mary married David Stratton, and their son married the eldest granddaughter of Rachel and Daniel Stratton - and their children have grown gray trying to figure out their exact relationship to the rest of the Strattons" - Daniel Stratton. Catherine married Sidney Rigdon, who for many years was an eloquent and widely known Presbyterian clergyman in the middle west.

* According to William F. Boogher's Gleanings in Virginia History, Seth Stratton was in Capt. Daniel Morgan's rifle company, which marched from Winchester, VA, to Cambridge, Massachusets, and joined the army under George Washington. They were twenty four days on the march. In the same company were George and William Greenway.

** Among his grandchildren and great-grandchildren are many stories of his Revolutionary War service, and they have in their possession articles of clothing that he wore as a Revolutionary Soldier. They claim that he had no own brothers, but had a half-brother by the name of Devoe.
